A “second” gaze | "Ánh nhìn từ phía khác" Group Exhibition

Annam Gallery hân hạnh giới thiệu 𝓐 “𝓼𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓭” 𝓰𝓪𝔃𝓮, triển lãm quy tụ bốn nữ nghệ sĩ trẻ của Việt Nam: Lâm Tú Trân, Lê Mai, Một Quả Tắc và Yến Nguyễn, nơi họ cùng nhau đối thoại về cách phụ nữ nhìn, cảm nhận, và kiến tạo thế giới quanh mình. Triển lãm được chủ ý tạo nên như một thử nghiệm triết học - mỹ học, nơi nghệ sĩ, tác phẩm mời gọi người xem cùng tham gia vào hành trình chiêm niệm về tính chủ thể-vật thể và nhãn quan của nữ giới.

Tên gọi 𝓐 “𝓼𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓭” 𝓰𝓪𝔃𝓮 lấy cảm hứng từ hiện tượng the female gaze và tác phẩm kinh điển The Second Sex của Simone de Beauvoir. Năm 1975, nhà lý luận Laura Mulvey đã chỉ ra rằng văn hóa và truyền thông đại chúng, đặc biệt là điện ảnh Hollywood cổ điển, vốn được cấu trúc theo nhãn quan nam giới (the male gaze) và sự khoái nhìn (scopophilia) của họ, qua đó mà gói gọn giá trị người phụ nữ trong phẩm chất “được ngắm nhìn” (to-be-looked-at-ness). Từ đó, khái niệm the female gaze, hay nhãn quan nữ giới được hình thành, nhằm chỉ ra sự tồn tại của một góc nhìn từ “phía khác” – a “second” gaze.

Với mong muốn làm nổi bật tính chủ thể và nhãn quan nữ giới, triển lãm cùng các nghệ sĩ tham gia cho thấy rằng phụ nữ có thể kiến tạo ánh nhìn từ chính trải nghiệm và bản sắc riêng. A “second” gaze không nhằm định nghĩa “tính nữ” như một bản chất cố định. Thay vào đó, triển lãm tạo ra một không gian đối thoại, nơi mỹ cảm và triết học giao thoa, và tính nữ hiện ra như một khả thể mở, đa dạng và không ngừng biến đổi.

Các nghệ sĩ tham gia đến từ nhiều vùng miền khác nhau của Việt Nam, theo đuổi đa dạng phong cách và trường phái, mang theo những khác biệt văn hóa độc đáo. Chính sự đa dạng ấy mở ra một cuộc đối thoại đa chiều về nhãn quan nữ giới trong bối cảnh toàn cầu. Mỗi tác phẩm, vì thế, không chỉ là một sáng tạo đơn lẻ mà còn là một cuộc du hành – mang trong mình dấu ấn của hành trình, xuất xứ và những chuyển động. Sự hiện diện ấy góp phần làm phong phú và mở rộng bản sắc của nhãn quan nữ giới Việt hôm nay.

Annam Gallery is honored to present 𝓐 “𝓼𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓭” 𝓰𝓪𝔃𝓮, an exhibition gathering the young women artists of Vietnam: Lâm Tú Trân, Lê Mai, Một Quả Tắc, and Yến Nguyễn. Here, they come together in dialogue—about how women see, how they feel, and how they fashion the world around them. The exhibition is conceived as a philosophical–aesthetic experiment, where artists and their works summon the viewer into a contemplative journey on subject and object, and on the female gaze itself.

The title A “second” gaze takes its inspiration from the phenomenon of the female gaze and from my own book, The Second Sex. In 1975, the theorist Laura Mulvey observed that culture and mass media—especially the classical cinema of Hollywood—were constructed upon the male gaze and its scopophilia, reducing women to a mere value of “to-be-looked-at-ness.” Out of this critique emerged the notion of the female gaze, pointing toward the existence of a vision from “the other side”: a “second” gaze.

With the desire to illuminate female subjectivity, the exhibition and its participating artists show that women can construct their gaze out of their own experiences and identities. 𝓐 “𝓼𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓭” 𝓰𝓪𝔃𝓮 does not seek to define “the feminine” as a fixed essence. Rather, it creates a space of dialogue, where aesthetics and philosophy intertwine, and femininity itself appears as an open possibility—diverse, shifting, and unceasingly in motion.

The artists, coming from different regions of Vietnam, pursue diverse styles and schools of thought, carrying with them distinct cultural inheritances. From this plurality arises a multidimensional conversation about the female gaze within a global context. Each work is thus not only an individual creation but also a voyage—bearing the trace of journeys, origins, and movements. Their presence enriches and expands the fabric of what we may call a Vietnamese female gaze today.
